Data & Statistics Resources

All the resources below offer free, open, trustworthy data and statistics that can be used for research.

Data vs. Statistics:

Data is raw information that requires analysis or interpretation for it to be meaningful and to answer research questions. It is the information that becomes statistics.
Statistics are data that has been interpreted, summarized, and/or processed. They give you quick facts or numbers on a topic.

Data.gov
The home of the U.S. Government's open data.
OAD: Data Repositories
Part of the Open Access Directory, this is a list of repositories and databases for open data.
Google Public Data Explorer
Google Public Data Explorer allows users to explore large datasets using embedded charts online charts.
USA.gov - Data and Statistics
Find data about the U.S., such as demographic and economic data, population, and maps. Much of this data comes from the US Census.
Pew Research Center
A nonpartisan organization that conducts data-driven social science research such as public opinion polling, media content analysis, and demographic research.

data.world makes it easy for everyone—not just the “data people”—to get clear, accurate, fast answers to any business question
re3Data Depository List
r3data.org is a global registry of research data repositories. r3data.org can be searched, or browsed by subject, content type, or country.

Gapminder
Gapminder provides global statistics and world trends. Users can search the datasets by name, view the government/organization that provided the data. The site also includes videos and teaching resources.
National Center For Education Statistics
The primary federal entity for collecting and analyzing data related to education.

NIST Chemistry Webbook
Access to a full array of data compiled and distributed by NIST under the Standard Reference Data Program
NIST Reference on Constants, Units, and Uncertainty
This National Institute of Standards and Technology has a searchable and browsable list of the important physical constants with bibliography, as well as a thorough description of the SI system of units and a description of methods of expressing degree of uncertainty in measurements.
CODATA Key Values for Thermodynamics
Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA) - internationally agreed values for the thermodynamic properties of key chemical substances
